The “How” from inside your body
A joint is a connection between to bones. Designed with articular cartilage to create a smooth lining of the bony ends, and synovial fluid for cushioning the forces of weight bearing, our joints are what keep our bodies moving, and it should happen smoothly and pain free.
But for some, a life with increased use from sports and asymmetric activities, previous injury or poor posture can all contribute to early wear and tear of the weight bearing joints. It is usually more prominent in areas such as knees, hips, spine, hands and feet, but can occur anywhere depending on the unique circumstances.
When joints aren’t moving smoothly any more, our nervous system conveys messages from the affected joints alerting our brain to the faulty functioning of the affected area. Common to all forms of arthritis is the stiff, achy, discomfort from a joint that is not moving as well as it should. Inside we feel the effects of cartilage wearing down, synovial fluid not able to transmit forces as efficiently any more, and sometimes bone grinding on bone.
On the outside, muscles, tendons and ligaments adapt to the abnormal movement, and often muscles tighten up and become stiff around arthritic joints. Whilst the condition is common, it does not mean that you should simply accept this and suffer in silence.
So what can be done?
Chiropractic treatment offers a gentle and safe approach to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Attending to the alignment and function of the joint as well as addressing dysfunctional muscle patterns, chiropractic care can offer a natural hands-on treatment directed at the painful area, but also looking at the other joints around to make sure the whole body is working efficiently from top to bottom.
